Re:  Announcement for Upcoming Village Events this Weekend

Dear Residents,

We hope everyone had a great summer and an enjoyable Labor Day Weekend. It sure seems to have all gone by so fast.

While we will miss the summer days (except the ones where Irene visited!), the village is looking forward to the approaching fall season and the new energy that changes in seasons bring to our community. As we see the children returning to a new school year - with all the wonderful activity this brings back to our community – your village government will also return from the ‘summer’ work schedule. Beginning in September, the regular Board of Trustees meetings return to the normal schedule of 2 meetings per month, on the 2ndand 4thTuesdays.

This is not to say things were quiet over the summer – there are a lot of things going on in Dobbs Ferry. We look forward to reporting to you over the coming weeks; updates on projects in progress, those in the pipeline, and new initiatives to be considered by the board; and as we receive a lot of input from residents regarding issues of interest and/or concerns in the village.

But to start-off for the moment, we would like to make the following announcements regarding 2 village events in Dobbs Ferry this weekend. In order of importance:

Sunday September 11, 2011 7:00 PM

Services for the Observance of the 10th Anniversary of 911
7:00 PM at the 911 Memorial
Dobbs Ferry Waterfront Park

We hope as many of you as possible can attend this memorial service. As in the past, this program has been organized by the Dobbs Ferry Volunteer Fire Department – and with the full participation of the Dobbs Ferry Police Department and the Dobbs Ferry Volunteer Ambulance Corp. The service will reflect not only on the events of the 911 attack – the lives lost and affected, the tremendous courage displayed, and the awesome rebuilding at work – but also on how proud and lucky we are in Dobbs Ferry to have so many dedicated responders who protect us and keep us safe.

The 911 Memorial Program is as follows:

911 Memorial Service 10th Anniversary Program

  • Opening Remarks and Introductions:  Chief James Trezza
  • Invocation:  Department Chaplain Tim Scannell
  • Remarks: Mayor Hartley Connett
  • Reflections: Maryellen Laino
  • Presentation of the Wreath: Members of the  DFFD, DFPD and DFVAC
  • Playing of Taps
  • Musical Arrangement on Bagpipe
  • Closing Prayer: Chaplain Scannell

After the service members of the DFFD will gather at the plaque and tree planted in memory of Douglas Miller, former member of the DFFD and FDNY who perished at the WTC on 9/11/2001 for a brief ceremony

Please join us at the 911 Memorial in Waterfront Park at 7:00 PM on Sunday.

Saturday September 10, 2011 12:00 PM

Ribbon Cutting for New Basketball Courts and Backboards at Gould Park
12:00 PM at the Basketball Court
Gould Park

Please join us for a fun family ribbon cutting event marking the new basketball court at Gould Park, and recognizing the work and contributions by those in the community who made it all happen. A priority initiative of the current administration – improving the village’s active recreational resources and assets – this project is a shining example of how a vision can become reality when village (public) and residents (private) pull together. It is something we should all cheer for, and this is an opportunity to do so.

The Ribbon Cutting program agenda is as follows:

Ribbon Cutting Program for New Basketball Courts and Backboards at Gould Park

  • Opening Remarks:  Mayor Connett (5 mins)
  • Recognition:  Matt Arone, Head, DF Recreation Dpt. (5 min),  Drew Coburn, Chair, Facilities Committee (5 mins)
  • Recipients
  • Presentation of Certificates:  Mayor Connett (5 mins)
  • Shoot-off Challenge:  Beat the Mayor, Matt and Drew at Foul Shooting! Win Something
Speaking of “cheering”, the ribbon cutting event is also timed so we can all go down to lower Gould Park and cheer for the Dobbs Ferry Eagles Football Team, who open the 2011/12 Season at 1:00PM against Bronxville, the reigning Class C NY State Football Champion. We wish new Head Coach Jim Moran and all the Players, Cheerleaders, and Coaches all the Best of Luck for a Successful Season – as we wish all the Dobbs Ferry Teams and extracurricular programs and groups – Sports, Arts, Crafts and Academics – the village is proud and supportive of all you do to represent the community.

Please join us at 12:00 PM at Gould Park for the new Basketball Court Ribbon Cutting Event, and then lets all join as a community at 1:00 PM to Cheer the Dobbs Ferry Eagles Football Team against the Bronxville Broncos.

GO EAGLES!

Mayor Connett
