Foundation Awards Six Grants to Teachers
Thanks to your generosity, the Foundation was able to fund every request that came our
way this fall from teachers throughout the Dobbs Ferry Schools System. We awarded a total
of 12 grants totaling $12,000.
Springhurst Elementary School received four grants:
- $3,150 for the Clearwater Classroom of the Waves program, a
three-hour sail on the Clearwater sloop down the Hudson River for all of
Springhursts fourth graders. The sail will demonstrate navigational skills and
scientific observation of the Hudson River and its ecosystem.
- $600 for the Teachers as Readers project sponsored by Barbara Miglio. This
program helps bring groups of teachers and administrators together to read and discuss
childrens books to create classrooms rich in literature.
- $3,630 for the Music of the Americas program sponsored by James Sadewhite.
Members the Westchester Philharmonic will provide five half-hour learning lessons on Jazz,
Latin American, Native American, Folk & Orchestra music to the third and fourth grade
students. The students will receive a CD as part of the curriculum and participate in a
field trip to Purchase College to hear the Philharmonic.
- $1,285 for A Walk through Monets Garden, sponsored by Barbara Miglio and
Tara Galati. Kindergarten students, with some interaction from the fourth graders, will
learn about Impressionism through hands-on activities (culminating in their creation of
their own watercolor poetry portfolios) and field trips.
The Middle School received one grant for $2,000 for a performance by the Joffrey
Ballet. Sponsored by Middle School principal James Welber, the grant will fund a
performance for the entire school by Joffreys Studio company teenage dancers who
will also participate in a discussion with the students about what it takes to enter this
demanding profession.
The High School received one grant for $1,370 for the English Language Learners
Literacy Center. By funding age-appropriate reading materials for the ESL library at
the High School, this grant aims to promoting even greater literacy among our ESL
students.
With your support, the Foundation looks forward to continuing to support funding
requests from our teachers!
