One way that story is often taught is through this simple concept: Character+Need+Obstacle = Story. A character has a need, and in the process of fulfilling that need, something gets in the way. Whatever genre you write in, this is a helpful starting place. And especially if you're telling a personal story - perhaps a story of this time we are in - using this concept as a guideline can help you get that draft together. Join us for discussion of this idea and for writing/sharing our work with author Lori Soderlind.

Lori Soderlind is Director of the MFA Creative Writing Program at Manhattanville College. Her most recent memoir, "The Change: My Great American, Postindustrial, Midlife Crisis Tour," will be released in June. Her first book, also a memoir, was "Chasing Montana: A Love Story." Her essays have been published in numerous journals and anthologies, including Norton's Anthology of Best Creative Nonfiction.
